Commissioner Paredes assumed office on August 1, 2008 after being appointed to the SEC by President George W. Bush on June 30, 2008 to replace Paul S. Atkins, a Republican commissioner, who was retiring at the end of his term.

Mr. Paredes practiced law in California at a number of prominent national law firms working on a variety of transactions and legal matters involving financings, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance.

Upon leaving his position at the SEC, Mr. Paredes made the following statement: “August 3rd will be my last day as a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Serving as a commissioner for the past five years has been a terrific honor. The chance to be involved in so many important issues has been rewarding, and it has been a privilege to have served with my fellow members of the Commission and to have worked with the talented SEC staff”.
“I want to congratulate Mike Piwowar and Kara Stein on having been confirmed as SEC commissioners and wish them both the best as they prepare to join the Commission. As for me, after having been an attorney, a professor, and an SEC commissioner, I look forward to whatever opportunities may come next” concluded Mr. Paredes.
