Pepperstone, a retail contract for difference (CFD) broker founded in Australia, has entered into a sports partnership with Adelaide Strikers, one of the country's top cricket teams. According to Tuesday's press release, the company became a Principal Partner for the Big Bash League (BBL|12).

While soccer is considered a national sport in many countries, cricket is way more popular in Australia, especially during the summer months, from September to April. Officially, 1.5 million players are registered with the local cricket sports associations. Stadiums gather more than 2 million fans yearly and even more watch cricket in front of their TVs. For companies, this is an excellent opportunity to build brand awareness.

Peeperstone, which originates from Melbourne, Australia, seizes the opportunity. According to a press release, the CFD retail broker has become an official partner of the Adelaide Strikers, and its logo will appear on the chest and sleeves of the Strikers' match shirts during the BBL|12.

"Australia is a key growth region for Pepperstone and our research tells us that cricket indexes strongly with our Australian clients. So, it's a natural strategic alignment for us both on a domestic level and more broadly in terms of broadcast and viewership into other global markets," Tony Gruebner, the Chief Marketing Officer at Pepperstone, commented.

Brokers Bet on Cricket

Brokers are willingly using the popularity of cricket in Australia and other parts of the world. Like in football and other sports, the presence of a broker's brand on jerseys, banners and advertising materials may raise brand awareness among an extensive group of fans and potential clients. The long-standing partnership between CFD providers and teams shows that sports go hand in hand with trading emotions.

Last year, many CFD brokers, including CMC Markets, OctaFX and IG Group, signed contracts with cricket teams. In January 2021, CMC signed a one-year deal to become the main sponsor of the Australian team, Sydney Sixers.

In April, OctaFX became a sponsor of the Delhi Capitals team, which plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). A month later, IG Group signed a high-level sports sponsorship deal, becoming the official partner of the English national cricket team.

Last November, Finance Magnates reported that India had banned local cricket teams from entering into partnerships with cryptocurrency exchanges. According to the Economic Times, the decision sparked controversy among several IPL franchise owners who had received interest from large cryptocurrency companies.
