SEC Recruits Mark J. Flannery as Chief Economist
- Starting in September, the University of Florida’s Warrington School of Business Administration professor will serve as SEC chief economist and director of its Division of Economic and Risk Analysis.

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced on July 21 that it has hired Mark J. Flannery as its new Chief Economist and Director of its Division of Economic and Risk Analysis, which provides interdisciplinary analysis to help inform the Commission’s policymaking, rulemaking, enforcement and examinations.
Dr. Flannery, currently a finance professor at the University of Florida’s Warrington School of Business Administration, will begin his new post in September. He replaces Craig M. Lewis who returned as a professor of finance at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management. Since Dr. Lewis left in May, deputy directors, Scott Bauguess and Jennifer Marietta-Westberg have acted as co-directors of the division.

He was a resident scholar at the New York Federal Reserve Bank Research Department from 2009 to 2010 and has served on its Financial Advisory Roundtable since 2006. Dr. Flannery also has been an advisory committee member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s Center for Financial Innovation and Financial Stability since 2009. He was the co-director of the FDIC’s Center for Financial Research from 2003 to 2007.
