AvaTrade has reached an agreement to acquire the majority of FXCM Group’s business and brand rights, bringing two of the CFD industry’s pioneering brokers under the AvaTrade Group umbrella. Finance Magnates exclusively reported in June that the Dublin-based broker wanted to buy Stratos, the operator of the FXCM and Tradu brands, from Jefferies.

While financial terms were undisclosed, the deal represents a major structural expansion for AvaTrade.

“Our ambition is to help shape the next phase of global online trading,” said Daire Ferguson, CEO of AvaTrade. “This transaction represents a significant further step toward realising that ambition. By combining FXCM’s established market presence with AvaTrade’s technology and product innovation, we aim to expand our global reach and build a stronger, more diversified trading group.”

Carving Up the Legacy Book

Established in New York in 1999, FXCM stood as one of the earliest retail brokers to provide online forex market access.

The transaction marks the final chapter in a decade-long restructuring for FXCM’s parent, Stratos Group. Investment bank Jefferies has held majority control of Stratos since stepping in with a liquidity rescue following the 2015 Swiss Franc black swan event.

Notably, AvaTrade is purchasing the majority of the firm rather than a single unified entity, capping off a piecemeal carve-out of FXCM’s operations.

As reported by Finance Magnates, the transaction follows just days after Stratos sold FXCM’s UK client book to London-based Trade Nation.
