This December 2014's Most Active Month for Bitcoin Donations to Edward Snowden's Official Legal Defense Fund

The official legal defense fund for Edward Snowden has seen the highest number of Bitcoin donations since it started accepting the cryptocurrency in August of last year.

The increased activity likely correlates with a recent uptick in interest for his cause among libertarians and the Bitcoin community, though his saga has not been in the news recently.

The donation address has received a total of 623 contributions amounting to 159.1 BTC, making it one of Bitcoin's most successful charitable drives. Apparently, the donations are needed: only 6.05 BTC remains in the address.

Snowden is currently taking asylum in Russia from US authorities, who have charged him with unauthorized communication of national defense and intelligence information after he revealed classified NSA documents to journalists.

This December, the number of donations has spiked to 82, the highest count since the campaign started in August 2013, when there were 178 contributions.

In terms of total BTC donated, this month's total of 3.23 BTC (worth approx. $1100) is the highest total since January- even when accounting for total dollar value at today's depressed prices. However, last year's October-December period- one of increased attention to Bitcoin as prices spiked- yielded the highest contributions when measured in dollars.

There is also a campaign on bitcoinwallet.com, although it has not gathered much as of yet.

An even more successful bitcoin-driven defense campaign has been that for Ross Ulbricht, alleged mastermind of the Silk Road marketplace. 620 BTC has been received thus far, in a shorter time span.
