Rugby sevens or “sevens” was included for the first time in the official program of the Rio Olympics in 2016. The sport was chosen after a committee was exploring 6 other proposals for a spot in Brazil.
Popularity in Australia
Rugby is one of the most popular sports in Australia and “sevens” is a very exciting version of the game that gathers a lot of attention. Invast’s entry into the sport coincides with the biggest event worldwide. San Francisco will be hosting the office Rugby Sevens World Cup later in 2018.
Australia’s teams have both qualified and will be competing for the top spot between the 20th and the 22nd of July. The Australian women’s team comes as one of the top favourites to win the cup after having won an Olympic gold medal in Rio 2016.
Aside from Australia, the sport is also very popular in the UK, New Zealand and South Africa.
