Crypto in Africa: Crypto Continent in The Making?

Crypto will be front and center at FMAS:23, with no shortage of panels and workshops looking to dive into the space with great detail. This will be the focus at one of the event’s most interesting panels this May, Crypto in Africa: Crypto Continent in The Making? which will take place on May 10, 14:50-15:20 at Centre Stage. This workshop will include the following talented speakers:

  • Olubunmi Fabanwo, Manager, Binance Africa Affiliate Program, Binance
  • John Lombela, CEO & Founder, Axalio
  • Alice Tomdio, Chief Financial Officer, Yellow Card
  • Chris Becker, Managing Executive, Cyber Banking, TymeBank
  • (Moderator) Alexander Belov, Founder, Coinstelegram Media & Fund

Despite the shockwaves of the FTX collapse, the African crypto community is constantly evolving. Join a host of visionary entrepreneurs to understand the unique challenges, use cases, and vast potential of crypto in Africa.

“Today, one in every ten Africans owns crypto currency. Contrast that to 3 in every 10 Africans today being banked. In a very short time, Africans have adopted crypto currency and are using it to solve very basic financial problems – savings, wealth creation, payments, remittances, and more,” noted Ms Tomdio.

Indeed, “Africa presents a unique opportunity for cryptocurrencies due to its informal economy that heavily relies on cash transactions. This factor could make cryptocurrencies an attractive alternative to traditional payment systems. However, there are significant regulatory and infrastructure challenges that need to be addressed for cryptocurrencies to achieve widespread adoption,” explained Mr Lombela.

In addition, the panelists will explore several key questions regarding the future of crypto in Africa: Can cryptocurrencies become a significant asset class in Africa? What do African countries aim to accomplish with stablecoins? How can regulation accelerate, or damage, adoption and innovation? How is bitcoin affected by market stability and where is it headed?

“I am most looking forward to exchanging ideas on how we can accelerate regulation to ensure crypto users are protected,” reiterated Ms Tomdio.
