Revolut Appoints Ex-Trading.com CEO Georgios Vasiliou to Head Cyprus Crypto Unit

Revolut’s digital assets unit in Cyprus has onboarded Georgios Vasiliou as new CEO. He previously served as the chief executive for Trading.com, the sister brand of retail brokerage giant XM.

He takes over from Costas Michael, the founding CEO of Revolut's Cyprus unit. Finance Magnates had learned that Michael stepped down from the company two months ago. Michael made the announcement public only yesterday (Thursday) on Linkedin, confirming he will remain on the Cyprus entity’s board.

Vasiliou brings extensive risk management experience to Revolut. Before becoming CEO at Trading.com, where he spent five years, he served as the company’s Chief Risk Officer. Before that, he spent seven years at XM, rising through the ranks from the dealing desk to risk manager.

Risk Remains a Top Priority for Revolut

This hire follows an ongoing trend in the fintech giant’s recruitment strategy: drawing from senior talent from Cyprus’ well-established brokerage sector while placing risk specialists in charge of its digital asset operations.

The emphasis on risk comes as European crypto rules have become more demanding. The grandfathering period for MiCA, the EU’s effort to unify crypto rules across the bloc, came to an end in July. Revolut’s Cyprus unit was among the early recipients of a Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) licence by CySEC and has since positioned itself to operate under the MiCA framework.

The EU is now reviewing MiCA.

By putting another seasoned risk executive at the helm, the fintech giant signals that compliance and risk controls remain its top priority as it expands its regulated crypto services across the bloc.
