Ryan X. Charles, Reddit’s new “cryptocurrency engineer” hired in September, has shed some more light on the company’s plans for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. Even since revealing a possible project for a specialized cryptocurrency later that month, such plans had been unclear.
Charles quit his Ph.D. program in Physics after discovering Bitcoin in May 2011, a discovery from which he “never recovered.” He worked for BitPay, but “couldn’t pass up an opportunity to bring bitcoin to millions of reddit users.” Reddit is one of the most active forums for Bitcoin discussion. Intuitively, some sort of integration with cryptocurrency is inevitable, and there has understandably been a push for such in the community. Charles noted:

“Why reddit? Because reddit is the largest phyle in the sense of Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age. There is no community in the world more ideally suited to adopting decentralized, internet-native technology like bitcoin. It’s a perfect match.”
Even after his blog session, plans remains unclear, partially because they are still under wraps but also because the company is still deciding on the exact direction it wants to take.
Dogecoin fans will be delighted to know that Charles may also be considering their coin, whose small denomination has made it an ideal tipping tool for many. In a response to such a request, Charles said, “Yes, I think there may be a way to integrate dogecoin. I will have more say about this after some of the upcoming announcements”- for which he was tipped, in dogecoin, shortly thereafter.
