American Red Cross, Ferguson Public Library accept bitcoin donations through BitPay

The American Red Cross and Ferguson Public Library are two of the high profile institutions to recently accept Bitcoin donations.

The American Red Cross will also participate in tomorrow's Bitcoin Black Friday, expected to be the biggest yet.

Ferguson's public library has become one of the few places of asylum in the city after renewed riots over a grand jury's decision not to indict a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed 18-year-old. Schools and shops have been closed due to the riots.

BitPay is facilitating the integration for both organizations, and will not be charging fees as per its policy for nonprofits. Donations to the Red Cross can also be made through a dedicated BitPay page.

BitPay struck while the iron was hot after a series of tweets, starting with Marc Andreessen tweeting interest in donating to library, "open when the schools are closed." From there, Tom Kysar of Koinify replied that he wants 100% of donations going to the library, without fees shaved off by credit card companies such as MasterCard. The library inquired how this can be set up, after which BitPay offered its assistance.
