Interactive Brokers Adds Ether Staking with Fees Capped at 30% of Rewards

  • Ether rewards remain staked and can compound until the client requests to withdraw the assets; no fee applies if the stake generates no reward.
  • Zero Hash provides the service and holds the assets outside IBKR brokerage accounts, leaving them without SIPC protection.

Eligible Interactive Brokers clients in the US can now stake Ether and earn blockchain rewards through the same portal they use to manage traditional investments.

Zero Hash provides the staking service and holds the assets in an account opened in the customer’s name. Interactive Brokers provides access through its Client Portal but does not custody or stake the Ether itself.

How Ether Staking Works

Clients choose how much Ether to stake through the IBKR Client Portal. Zero Hash then places the assets with Ethereum validators and credits any rewards back to the client’s staked balance, where they can continue compounding until the Ether is unstaked.

Interactive Brokers and Zero Hash deduct their fees from the rewards before crediting the remainder to the customer. Their combined charge is capped at 30%, and no fee applies if the stake earns nothing.

Neither the reward rate nor payment is guaranteed because both depend on Ethereum network conditions and validator performance.

Crypto Assets Remain Outside SIPC Protection

The split between the two providers also determines which protections apply.

Assets held in a customer’s Zero Hash account, including cryptocurrency and fiat balances, are not protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) or the customer-protection rules covering securities in an Interactive Brokers brokerage account.

Customers also bear losses if problems occur at Zero Hash or during the staking process. These may result from validator penalties, known as slashing, or service disruptions that delay rewards or temporarily prevent assets from being staked or unstaked.

Staking Extends IBKR’s Crypto Offering

The launch extends a relationship that goes beyond a standard infrastructure contract. Interactive Brokers led Zero Hash’s $104 million funding round in 2025, when the crypto infrastructure provider was valued at $1 billion.

Zero Hash already supports several of the broker’s digital-asset services. Interactive Brokers introduced 24/7 account funding with stablecoins in January and later expanded crypto transfers and its selection to 20 assets. Ether staking adds another product to the same infrastructure relationship.

Robinhood, eToro and Trade Republic already offer staking in their respective markets. Interactive Brokers is now moving closer to that level of crypto functionality, while maintaining a clear division between its regulated brokerage business and the Zero Hash accounts that hold clients’ digital assets.
