Online adult platform Porn.com has recently began accepting Bitcoin as a payment option.

A recent post on the Bitcoin section of social news and entertainment sharing site Reddit, has brought the news of the cryptocurrency being accepted by the adult website.

Porn.com’s premium signup page now has, in addition to credit cards, paypal, online checks, and phone orders, the option to pay for a monthly premium subscription using Bitcoin.

Adult websites that support Bitcoin is nothing new. However the majority of adult websites supporting Bitcoin are either small blog based sites or obscure cam-sites and usually use accept Bitcoin as the only form of payment. This is the first we see of a leading name in the adult industry accepting the cryptocurrency.

BitPay is the entity behind processing the Bitcoin payments for Porn.com, and it is quite surprising since up until recently BitPay’s terms of service did not allow for merchants who provide “items that are considered obscene” and “certain sexually oriented materials or services”. When evaluating BitPay’s current terms of service, there is no mention of restriction and limitations on adult oriented material.

Support for Bitcoin on adult websites may seem like a natural fit due to the low transaction fees, pseudo-anonymity and inability to chargeback transactions. It is not certain what kind of impact this will have on Bitcoin but the acceptance of Bitcoin for adult content could help instil its position as a widely accepted form of payment, especially considering how the adult industry has been promoting new technologies in the past like 3D, streaming and HD videos and even the internet use itself.

Neither BitPay nor Porn.com has released any announcement on the addition of Bitcoin as a payment option so far.
