Ulbricht pleads not guilty to new charges

Ross William Ulbricht, accused operator of the shuttered Silk Road marketplace, has pleaded not guilty to a slew of new charges levied against him two weeks ago. These include narcotics trafficking, distribution of narcotics by means of the internet and conspiracy to traffic in fraudulent identification documents.

Prosecutors have dubbed Silk Road as “the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet.”

With his plea, Ulbricht, with the guidance of lawyer Joshua Dratel, is raising the stakes in case of similar or greater severity than that of Charlie Shrem and Robert Faiella. At nearly the same time as Ulbricht's plea, the two pleaded guilty to charges of operating an unlicensed money transmission business as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

The plea was entered at the US District Court, Southern District of Manhattan. The case goes to trial in November.
