Coinbase Tips Hat to ChangeTip, Shutting down Own Tipping Feature

Coinbase has shut down its tipping feature in deference to the increasingly popular ChangeTip tool.

Coinbase launched its tipping feature last November. It says 10,000 users have accepted tips across a variety of websites.

The company said that ChangeTip has gotten even better traction, "and done a great job at pushing the tipping ecosystem forward." They explained:

"ChangeTip is an excellent example of a company which uses our APIs, and we'd like to support them instead of competing with them. Our goal is to have a thriving ecosystem of many companies in the Bitcoin space building innovative applications like this."

Coinbase will instead focus on its core business, including secure APIs for bitcoin storage, the recently launched exchange, wallets and merchant tools.

Coinbase's tipping feature will officially shut down April 1. The company will be working to migrate its users over to ChangeTip's tool during the coming weeks.

And speaking of looking to focus on its core business, Coinbase added another five countries to its bitcoin buying/selling service: Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Norway and Croatia. The service is now supported in 24 countries.
