The Japan Exchange Group (JPX), which operates multiple securities exchanges including the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Osaka Securities Exchange, has reported its monthly ‎trading volumes for December 2018, which managed to build on the previous ‎month’s healthy gains.

The JPX also saw a strong monthly performance across its derivatives trading, corresponding to a total trading volume of 38 million contracts in December 2018. The figure rose 23 percent from 31.5 million contracts in November 2018. In 2018, total derivatives trading volume was 388,342,871 contracts, an all-time high.

In addition, total derivatives trading at the JPX registered a value of 375 trillion yen ($3.4 trillion), a rise of 56 percent month-over-month from 240 trillion yen ($2.2 trillion) in November 2018. Total derivatives trading value in 2018 was JPY 3,217 trillion, while the trading value for equity index derivatives was JPY 1,664 trillion.

The JPX reported annual trading volume for Nikkei 225 mini at 273,327,463 contracts, while TOPIX futures registered 26,224,277 contracts.

In terms of exchange-traded-funds (ETFs), the monthly trading value at the JPX yielded a figure of 5.5 trillion yen ($49.8 billion) in December 2018, which amounts to a 19 percent jump month-over-month. In addition, ETFs turnover experienced a notable increase compared to a year earlier, growing 51.6 percent from December 2017.

Other activity highlights include:

- Annual trading volume for Nikkei 225 mini was 273,327,463 contracts, an all-time high.

- Annual trading volume for TOPIX futures was 26,224,277 contracts, an all-time high.

- Annual trading volume for TOPIX Banks Index Futures, TSE REIT Index futures, TSE Mothers Index Futures, DJIA Futures, and Nikkei 225 Weekly Options hit the record highs.

- In December 2018, trading volume for the night session was 14,678,060 contracts, and the ratio of the night session was 38.3%.
