Since April, selected virtual private server providers have raised prices by as much as 144% as AI-driven demand strained memory supply. For retail trading, the increases raise a second question: who pays to keep an algorithm online around the clock?
The bill currently falls in three places. A trader can rent a server, a brokerage can subsidize one in exchange for trading volume or a platform vendor can include hosted execution in its software.
Demand for dedicated trading infrastructure remains visible. Beeks signed a five-year Proximity Cloud contract with an FX brokerage this year.
Platform-hosted bots reduce setup work but give the vendor more control over capacity, eligibility and the execution environment. Traditional VPS products allow broader customization, including external applications and Windows-dependent strategies.
Generic VPS Prices Jump, but Existing Bills Lag
Hetzner raised the monthly price of its CPX22 cloud server in Germany and Finland from EUR 7.99 to EUR 19.49 on June 15, an increase of 143.9%. The change generally applies to new orders and servers that customers rescale, while unchanged existing instances retain their terms.
OVHcloud increased its entry VPS-1 plan from EUR 4.49 to EUR 6.49, or 44.5%, and VPS-6 from EUR 48.99 to EUR 72.99, or 49.0%. OVHcloud said new prices apply after the current contractual period.
Leaseweb set an average 20% increase for selected new VPS contracts from Aug. 1. Its US entry plan nearly doubled from $3.50 to $6.99, while ongoing contracts were excluded. Leaseweb cited higher memory and storage costs among the reasons.
OVHcloud said memory manufacturers had redirected capacity toward GPUs and high-bandwidth computing. Micron separately told investors that AI demand was outpacing industry supply for memory and storage.
At data-center operator Equinix, AI workloads accounted for about 60% of its largest first-quarter deals.
The quoted products are generic infrastructure, not managed trading servers. A trading VPS may also include Windows, support, backups and a location close to the matching infrastructure used for execution , so the price changes are not a direct measure of broker costs.
Algo Hosting Splits Across Three Models
MetaTrader users can rent a virtual terminal through the MQL5 network for $15 for one month, falling to an equivalent $10 a month on an annual plan. The service migrates Expert Advisors and charts, but it does not provide physical server access and prohibits DLL calls.
Brokerages sometimes cover that expense for active clients. Pepperstone's published terms require at least $1 million of trading volume over 60 days for sponsored VPS costs. FP Markets and IC Markets use monthly lot thresholds in their own programs.
The volume conditions connect the hosting subsidy to brokerage revenue. Specialist providers remain part of the same market: another FX broker awarded Beeks a roughly $2 million contract in 2025 for a dedicated Proximity Cloud environment.
cTrader Brings Cloud Execution Into Its Apps
cTrader takes the vendor-funded route. "Spotware covers the cost," Andrei Datsenko, General Manager at cTrader, told FinanceMagnates.com.

Cloud Execution lets compatible cBots run without a separate trader-managed VPS. A trader can start and manage a cloud cBot through cTrader Mobile, Web, Windows or Mac. Cloud synchronization makes installed and created algorithms available across applications, while the bot continues running when the trader's device is offline.
cTrader's published rules allow up to 10 concurrent cloud instances on a live account and one on a demo account. The demo instance stops after seven days but can be restarted.
"The server location for a Cloud cBot is selected automatically based on the broker," Datsenko said. Traders cannot choose a region, and he did not provide a numerical latency target or an uptime commitment.
Platform Clouds Do Not Run Every Strategy
cTrader Cloud operates in a Linux-based environment. Its published requirements exclude Windows-specific interfaces, runtime-loaded standalone DLLs and ordinary HTTP requests. Local files are cleared when an instance stops or is deleted.
Those limits leave a role for full VPS access when a strategy uses external processes, custom networking, several trading terminals or Windows components.
TradeLocker Studio currently uses another model. For continuous 24-hour operation, the computer must remain awake and the application open.
