  • The company reports growing use as a primary account, but number of active user is not disclosed.

Revolut has surpassed five million retail customers in Romania, making the country one of its largest markets in Central and Eastern Europe.

London's trading industry is coming home!

The customer figure is equivalent to roughly one-third of Romania’s estimated adult population of 15.5 million. However, it represents registered customers rather than active users and may include holders of under-18 accounts. Compared with the country’s entire population, the figure is closer to one-quarter.

Revolut added more than 500,000 Romanian customers in less than 12 months. In 2023, the company reported three million local users and described Romania as its largest CEE market and second-largest globally after the UK.

Most Card Payments Now Stay in Romania

Romanian customers made an average of more than 56 million card payments each month between September 2025 and August 2026, according to company data. Of these transactions, 77% were made at merchants inside Romania.

The local share suggests that customers increasingly use Revolut for everyday spending rather than only for overseas travel, currency exchange or cross-border transfers. However, the figure measures the number of card transactions, not their value.

Over the same period, Revolut said its internal measure of customers using the service as their primary account increased by 40%. The company has not disclosed how it defines a primary account or how many of its five million registered customers fall into that category.

Revolut’s Romanian offering now includes local IBANs, personal loans and savings products alongside payments, transfers, foreign exchange and investments.

Together, these services give customers more reasons to keep regular income and everyday spending inside Revolut rather than use it only as a secondary payment account.

New Bucharest Office for 300-Person Team

The company is also preparing to open a 1,300-square-metre headquarters in Bucharest’s Charles de Gaulle Plaza. The location will support a Romanian team that already has nearly 300 employees.

The investment expands Revolut’s local operations but does not create a separate Romanian bank or move into branch-based distribution.

Romanian services are provided through a local branch of Revolut Bank UAB, the Lithuanian-licensed bank supervised by the European Central Bank and the Bank of Lithuania. Revolut’s customer base size does not reflect its position in Romania by deposits, lending, or total assets.

Revolut has not disclosed the number of monthly active Romanian users, the value of deposits held by local customers or the total value of card payments made at Romanian merchants.
