Amazon today has announced that they are launching a crowd sourcing birthday gift service in conjunction with Facebook. Understanding how critical Facebook has become for many to remember birthdays of friends and family, Amazon has made Amazon Birthday Gift a way to have your social network work together and get you one big gift in the form of an Amazon gift card, which many I am sure would not mind at all.
“Birthdays have always been social occasions, and sites like Facebook now make it possible for anyone around the world to send birthday wishes to friends – with Amazon Birthday Gift, those many individual messages can become a big gift,” said Steve Shure, Amazon vice president, traffic. “Whether it’s your best friend or your old high school teammate, Amazon Birthday Gift lets you join a social gift that will grow as more friends participate, which makes giving and receiving birthday messages on Facebook even more fun.”

It all starts with one friend buying you a gift card and it does not appear on your timeline until your birthday. These come in denominations of $1,$5, $10 or $25. After that others can add on to the balance. In addition to the barrage of “Happy Birthday” one liners, you will have a link to your gift card and letting you know who contributed, so you can send thank you notes or statuses.
