Equinix, an interconnection and Data Center company, announced on Monday that the company is expanding with the addition of the third International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in the city of Perth.

The company pledged $54 million for the first phase of the project, with a target to open in Q4 of 2021. Named PE3, the new data center will be the company’s 18th data center in Australia. Equinix aims to meet the growing demand for digital infrastructure.

According to the official press release, the PE3 facility will provide access to around 1,045 companies in Australia including 215 networks and 395 cloud providers. The company termed Perth as an important location of Australia’s internet infrastructure.

Commenting on the development, Guy Danskine, Managing Director at Equinix Australia, said: “We're thrilled to continue an exciting growth period for Equinix with the planned addition of the PE3 IBX in Perth. Since entering West Australia almost three years ago, we've seen substantial growth driven by the state's digital economy."

"As the impact of digital technologies continues to grow in intensity across every industry, such as mining, government, and life sciences, digital leaders need one platform that brings together and interconnects the foundational infrastructure required to create a digital advantage. The interconnection options available in PE3 will support our customers during their digital transformation journeys as they move their businesses closer to the edge and look to expand within Asia-Pacific and beyond," he added.

Data Center Location

According to the details mentioned by the company, the new PE3 IBX data facility will be located at a distance of around 13 miles from Perth Airport, adjacent to the PE2 IBX facility with a planned secure link Bridge to connect the two facilities. The total number of data centers in Equinix’s global platform now stands at 220 across 63 metros in Australia, Singapore, Japan, Korea, China, and Hong Kong.
