After 14 Years at Barclays, Juan Flames Takes on CEO Role at BME for SIX

Juan Flames will assume the role of Head of BME Exchanges and CEO of BME at SIX on November 15, 2024. He will represent the company’s business in Spain and report directly to Bjørn Sibbern, the Global Head of Exchanges and member of the SIX Executive Board.

He brings extensive experience and knowledge of the securities markets in Spain, along with an international market profile that will support the growth and innovation efforts we have been implementing since 2020,” said Jos Dijsselhof, Chairman of BME and CEO of SIX.

Barclays Veteran Leads BME

Flames was Vice Chairman of Capital Markets at Barclays Bank Europe in Madrid. In this role, he oversaw interest rate and foreign exchange derivatives for corporate and public sector clients. He was also part of the Capital Market EMEA leadership team.

Before taking up this position, Flames spent 14 years at Barclays Bank. He held various roles in both the UK and Spain, with a focus on Capital Markets and Investment Banking.

Earlier, David Brupbacher was appointed Head of IT and a Member of the Executive Board at SIX, effective July 1, 2024, as reported by Finance Magnates.

Flames's Background in Finance

His earlier career includes over a decade at Goldman Sachs in London. He has a dual degree in Law and Business Administration from ICADE (E-3) in Madrid.

Javier Hernani, who has represented SIX and BME in Spain, will now concentrate on his work in the Securities Services unit at SIX. This unit is a key contributor to the company’s revenue and operates in a competitive environment.

Hernani will continue to lead the Securities Services business as a member of the SIX Executive Board and will remain on the BME Board of Directors.
